Top 4 Car Buying Myths

Top 4 Car Buying Myths

TCar buying myths range from the mundane to the absurd. Most of these are relatively harmless, but some can wind up costing you both time and money.

At Dallas Lease Returns, we negotiate thousands of car deals every year. In this article, we use our expertise to clarify a number of the common misconceptions people have around car buying.

Top Car Buying Myths:

1. A lower price or payment means you got a better deal.

Many car buyers focus on a specific number—the price of the car, the monthly payment, interest rate, etc. This can make it easy to manipulate the surrounding numbers.

Dallas Lease Returns recommends: Do the math to look at the deal as a whole rather than focusing single-mindedly on a single component of it.

2. You need to buy now or the deal will go away.

Unless the car you’ve found is in limited supply, the odds are good that you’ll be able to get a similar vehicle next week or even next month for around the same price.

Dallas Lease Returns recommends: Make sure you’re getting the car you want at an overall good deal. If you’re not, walk away and keep looking for what you really want. At Dallas Lease Returns, we have an expansive inventory of 500+ cars that is constantly turning over. So if you don’t find the car you want one week, chances are we will have it the following week or month.

3. You should wait until the last minute to mention your trade-in.

Dealerships are so used to this trick, it has a special name, “parachuting the trade.” It can add hours to the amount of time you spend at the dealership because the entire trade-in evaluation won’t start until after the rest of the deal is negotiated—without really changing the amount you’ll receive for your trade-in.

Dallas Lease Returns recommends: Do your research on both the value of the trade-in and the new car so you can make sure you’re getting a fair price for both.

4. You can out-negotiate or trick the dealership into giving you a better deal.

Car dealerships negotiate hundreds of transactions each month; you probably only buy a car once every few years. Even if you consider yourself a good negotiator, the dealership will always have more information and will be better able to control the transaction than you.

At Dallas Lease Returns, we negotiate thousands of new car deals every year, we know the market and can use our buying volume to get you a great price on your vehicle.

If you’re in the market for a pre-owned vehicle, Dallas Lease Returns can help you get a great price on exactly what you want. Click here to contact our team of car experts today!

Top Five Car Care Questions

Top Five Car Care Questions

DLR #2: Top Five Car Care Questions At Dallas Lease Returns, we have customers that ask us car questions all the time! The following are the top five most asked questions we receive:

Question #1: Can I switch from conventional oil to synthetic? What about synthetic to conventional?

Yes, most of the time. Some drivers like to use conventional oil because it’s what they’re accustomed to and because it’s cheaper than synthetic (but doesn’t last as long). Other drivers lean toward synthetic because it burns cleaner, lasts longer, and even improves performance. You can choose whichever you oil you want, as long as your car doesn’t call for a specific type of motor oil. Some cars HAVE to use synthetic oil, and using conventional could damage them, so be sure to consult your owner’s manual before making a decision.

Question #2: Should I pay more attention to my owner’s manual, my technician, or my instrument panel when it comes to routine car service?

You should always pay the most attention to your instrument panel in your car. The warning lights illuminate for a reason, after all. Next, listen to your car technician. When they’re working on your car, a technician should do a multi-point inspection to look for any other issues and can advise you as to which services you need and when. Finally, use your owner’s manual as a backup reference for a car care schedule.

Question #3: Are winter tires really necessary?

Not all the time, but sometimes, yes. If you’re a resident in Texas, chances are your all-weather tires will suit you just fine throughout the winter. If you live in a colder climate that sees heavy snow, extreme cold, and lots of ice, then you need to schedule a car care appointment to change out your tires. Winter tires are better suited to extreme cold and are more pliable in these conditions, giving them better traction.

Question #4: Do I have to replace my timing belt?

Yes, this is very important. There’s no getting around it, at Dallas Lease Returns, we know that it’s expensive, but your timing belt is very necessary. Your timing belt ensures that everything is running smoothly under the hood, and if it gives out, you could face a whole host of other issues. Additionally, did you know that if it breaks while the car is in motion, it can damage other parts of your engine? This could cost you heavily.

Question #5: Will using premium gasoline improve my fuel efficiency?

No, this is a common myth. Using premium gasoline won’t improve any aspect of your car’s performance. In fact, you only need it if your car specifically calls for it. Save yourself some money at the pump and stick to unleaded gasoline!

The Difference Between Conventional and Synthetic Oil

The Difference Between Conventional and Synthetic Oil

Do you use synthetic or conventional oil for your vehicle? Both types of oil have pros and cons, and it is important to understand how they can both benefit or potentially hurt your vehicle.

What is Conventional Motor Oil?

Conventional motor oil is a lubricant that is derived directly from crude oil. It has excellent properties that allows it to provide lubrication at high temperatures and can maintain its stability over long periods of time.

What is Synthetic Motor Oil?

Synthetic oil is actually a modified and improved version of conventional oil. Some blends of synthetic oil are designed specifically to increase the performance and life of high-mileage cars, whereas others are specifically designed for high-performance engines. Some types of synthetic oil even  have the ability to increase your car’s fuel mileage by using special advanced lubricants.

Benefits of Using Synthetic Oil over Conventional Oil

Improved Lubrication

Most synthetic oils have added lubricants that increase the ability of the oil to keep engine parts slick, especially at high temperatures. This decreases wear over time, and may make your engine last longer.

In fact, in the last 10 years, vehicle manufacturers have redesigned engines to meet fuel efficiency and emissions standards. To do that, today’s engines have to work harder and burn much hotter, and conventional oil just cannot handle that heat tolerance. This is why most vehicles built after 2012 require synthetic oil.

Better Stability

Synthetic oils are specially engineered to maintain their viscosity (thickness) at higher temperatures and over longer periods of time. This prevents engine wear in several ways; it allows the oil to “stick” to engine parts more readily, providing better wear protection and it also protects your engine from dry starts.

A “Dry Start” occurs when your car has been sitting for an extended period of time. Gravity pulls the oil down to the bottom of the engine, allowing the components at the top of the engine to lose lubrication and run unprotected. By helping the oil maintain viscosity, synthetic oil additives decrease the effects of “dry starts.”

Reduced Breakdown

Synthetic oil is less likely to break down, which means it does not need to be changed as often as conventional oils. The more durable properties of synthetic oil also ensure that your engine is protected for longer periods of time.

Fewer Deposits

As conventional oils break down, it often leaves deposits on engine components. Mechanics refer to this as “sludge” or “scaling”. This is especially common in overexerted engines. As conventional oil breaks down, it literally sticks to different surfaces in the engine and bakes on.  Synthetic oil is less likely to do this due its increased lubrication elements.

Conclusion

The properties that separate conventional oil from synthetic oil affects your engine in many important ways. Although synthetic oil is slightly more expensive than conventional oil, it may extend your vehicles life and save you money in the long run.

How to Stay Safe in an Uber or Lyft

How to Stay Safe in an Uber or Lyft

In this day and age, you can call a ride at the press of a button on your smartphone. However, drivers of these ride services (such as Uber and Lyft) are not always safe, and it is important to note that they are still strangers. This is why we created this list of tips to help you stay safe the next time you summon a ride…t might just save your life.

Plan ahead

Before you request a ride, know where your destination is, so you are aware of the general route your driver should be headed. If he/she is taking you in the opposite direction, or a strange route, text 911 or try to escape the vehicle.

Request your ride inside

To avoid the possibility of an abduction, do not wait for your Uber or Lyft driver outside with your phone in your hand. Instead, wait indoors until the app shows your driver has arrived.

Get in the right car

Before you get in the car, check that the license plate, driver photo, and driver name all match what’s listed in the app. Rides can only be requested through the app, so never get in a car with a driver who claims to be with Uber or Lyft, and offers a ride.

Be a backseat rider

If you’re riding alone, sit in the backseat. This ensures you can safely exit on either side of the vehicle to avoid moving traffic. It also gives you, and your driver, some personal space.

Buckle up

The Centers for Disease Control reports that seatbelt use is the most effective way to save lives, and reduce injuries related to car accidents.

Share your trip details with a friend

If using Uber, while en route, tap “Share status” in the app to share your driver’s name, photo, license plate, and location with a friend or family member. They can track your trip, and your ETA without downloading the Uber app.

Protect your personal information

There’s no need to share your phone number, or other contact information, with your driver. If a rider and driver need to contact each other, the Uber or Lyft app automatically obscures both phone numbers to protect everyone’s privacy.

Follow your intuition

Trust your instincts, and use your best judgment when riding. If you ever feel you’re in an emergency situation, call or text 911 immediately. Don’t worry about being foolish or overreacting, it’s always better to play it safe rather than be sorry.

Give feedback on your trip

Your feedback helps improve the driving experience for everyone. If your Uber or Lyft driver made you uncomfortable, report them. It may save the next person.

We hope you consider  these tips the next time you summon a ride from Uber or Lyft, or any other ride service. Have any other safety ideas? Please share in the comments below!

How to Maintain Your Vehicle’s Leather Interior

How to Maintain Your Vehicle’s Leather Interior

Many people don’t realize that you need to take good care of your vehicle’s leather interior to make sure it does not harden or even crack over time.  Here are some pointers on caring for your leather interior!

How to Clean Your Leather Interior

Leather is a resilient material but should still be cleaned about 4 times per year.  Start by vacuuming all leather surfaces to pick up any debris in the stitches or contours.  Then use a slightly damp microfiber towel to wipe off any noticeable residue before moving to the next step.

Next you will need a brush and leather cleaner.  Spray the cleaner on the brush to avoid liquid leaking into your seats through perforations or stitches.  Find a small, inconspicuous place to test the cleaner before applying to the major surfaces.  Make sure the cleaner you have selected is safe before proceeding with larger areas.  Once the cleaning product is verified as safe, gently scrub the major surfaces until everything looks clean.  Wipe dry with a clean microfiber cloth.

You should also condition your leather once a year, due to the Texas heat.  Its best to do this right after cleaning has finished drying.  There are many leather conditioners on the market so look for one that is water based and pH neutral.  Apply to a small test area like with the cleaner.  If it doesn’t discolor or stain, you can continue with the rest of the material.  Rub the conditioner in with a soft brush or microfiber cloth.  Massage the product into the leather and wipe any excess away.

Lastly allow the conditioner time to sit and soak into the leather.  Its best to allow this to happen overnight, but a few hours will do as well, just be sure to keep the vehicle out of direct sunlight during this time.  Once set, buff with a clean microfiber cloth and enjoy!

How to Get Your Vehicle Ready for Spring

How to Get Your Vehicle Ready for Spring

Winter can do a number on your car. Slush, salt and cold temperatures take a toll on everything from the tires to the wiper blades. So, as spring approaches, it’s a good idea to give your car a thorough once-over to undo winter’s damage. Continue reading to learn how you can get your car in shape for spring!

Wash Underneath

Wintertime driving will coat the bottom of your car with salt, sand and other grime that can cause corrosion. Corrosion can lead to rust problems, which can make your car much harder to resell or even dangerous to drive.

Spend a few extra dollars for the undercarriage power wash at the local car wash or spray the car’s bottom with your own hose.

Detail

Salt and sand can damage the car’s paint. Give your car a thorough cleaning and wax it with a paste or liquid wax. Scrub the bottoms of doors, which can get coated with grime, and clean the window channels with a silicone spray. Use a steam cleaner or apply a rug-cleaning spray to remove all the salt from the car’s inside.

Replace Wipers

Wiper blades get a workout during the winter months. To get ready for the rainy months ahead, we advise you change them out every Spring and Fall!

Check Tire Pressure

Check your tire pressure. Cold weather can cause tires to be under inflated and the onset of warm weather can over inflate them. Also, visually inspect your tires to make sure they’re wearing evenly and have plenty of tread.

Top Off All Fluids

Winter weather can deplete some fluids, especially windshield wiper fluid, so top them off yourself if they’re too low. A service station will also do the job for $25 or so. You should change your oil, brake fluid and transmission fluid every 5,000 miles regardless of the season.

Have any other maintenance tips for Spring? Tell us in the comments below! Or if you’re tired of your vehicle and looking for a change/upgrade this Spring, browse our vast inventory online!
